Waiting All Night For the iPhone in Korea

Here are some dedicated iPhone fans waiting at near Sports Complex Station in Seoul for the KT iPhone launch.
The first obsessed fan showed up at 11am yesterday. The photo above was taken sometime in the middle of the night.
The first person to make a phone call on their iPhone (out of the 1,000 selected), receives a full year of free calling on their new iPhone in Korea. The first 500 receive gifts including free calling, and free accessories like iPhone speakers and headphones.
Check out a video of what’s going on.

I was truly excited about the iPhone coming to Korea. You can imagine my disappointment when they told me, “No foreigners. Koreans only.” Sigh. I will continue to live without an iPhone until KT becomes more foreigner-friendly.

does anyone know exactly how this would work for people with an E-2? i hear many different things and was wondering if the rules change depending on which show store you go to. Also has anyone used a korean friends name and their account…i’ve had problems with this too. I cant seem to get a hold of KT..is there an english line? this is way harder than it should be

What is this? Why would they not allow foreigners to buy an iPhone? If I were living as a foreigner in China, I could buy one! I can’t believe that they want us to bring our language and education to teach their children, but they are prejudiced against us in which technology we can buy?
Can someone explain the reason for this?

@Tom: the reason is prejudice, just to put it mildly.

If you have an E2 you can get a 1 year contract. You will have to pay cost up front.
F-visa holders can get the standard iPhone 2 year contract + discount provided they have a non-teaching job.

iPhoneFanboy,
Thanks for the info. How did you find this out? Do they ask for proof of employment?

Jose-
Hopefully, their policy will change. Business-wise, it does make sense why they don’t offer subsidies to short-term visa holding foreigners…..

Tom,
It is unfair.

Pete,
It sounds like E-2 visa holders will not qualify for the KT iPhone subsidy. Stay tuned for more updates about this.

Lucky, 1st person to get the iphone and makes a call gets a free year of phone calls. I am Korean, but I live in the U.S and I do have an iphone 3G S. If only iphone wasn’t carrier locked, I would probably use it in Korea as well, thus I would just carry 1 phone every where, and just switch sim cards. I did have an iphone 3G that was jailbroken and unlocked, but I tried putting in my Show sim card and it didn’t work.
