Hey! So I am useless when it comes to technology, so i need your advice. I know South Korean sim cards are a little different to the rest of the world but will the iPohne (if i buy it here) work when i go home to South Africa? In South Africa our sim cards are the same as the ones in America… I’ve been trying to find out if they have changed the iPhone to suit Korean sim cards, I hope they haven’t cause I really do want to buy one here and take it home with me! Any adcive will be appreciated

Nicole,
I will reply to this thread as soon as I find out, unless someone else beats me to it.
Anyone know the answer right off hand?

that’s only possible if the korean iphone is “factory unlocked” like the ones in Hong Kong, Australia, Italy, etc…. seeing how the korean mobile industry has been in the last decade or so… i highly doubt KT would get unlocked iphones… but who knows~? but i highly doubt it since this place has been a totally closed market for yeeeaaaaars….

South Korea USIMs are not different than anywhere else in the world. The difference in Korea is the Service Providers “white list” all phones. If you have a Korea USIM, your phone must be on the white list.

It’s up here as well: http://www.apple.com/iphone/countries/ which makes it official for me.
I really hope I can get one unlocked. I’d love to be able to use it in other countries that use SIM cards for prepaid phones (ie. Thailand).

In response to Nicole’s post, I’m not sure if the Korean iPhones will be carrier locked because most carriers every where else in the world is carrier locked, except some countries where you can get them unlocked via their carrier. If you do look at the apple site (U.S) and on the support it does say it’s carrier locked.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
If you click on above, click on Asia-Pacific and find Korea, and you will see that it is carrier locked.
So to answer your question, it is carrier locked and can only be used in Korea.
